The five largest grocery chains in Canada will require their suppliers to shift to PET for thermoformed clamshell packaging, reports Waste & Recycling News. The move – aimed at increasing recycling and simplifying the product stream – is being championed by The Retail Council of Canadian Grocers. Grocery store chains involved in the project include Wal-Mart Canada Corp., Loblaws Inc., Safeway Canada, Metro and Sobeys.

At OPG we have been moving our production to PET over the last three years. We are ready to go!

OPS was recyclable however, it had to be broken down. Here in the west very few recyclers would handle it, in fact the last who would went bankrupt. The reason why we didn’t jump in from the beginning is that OPS is far more rigid and therefore takes less material to make a package. PET (which is pop bottle material) is definitely the best choice given the lack of OPS recycling.

One of those changes is the shift in the fresh prepared foods category.

For years we have worked with grocers to help them develop their deli and HMR categories, but today much of this production has shifted to food processors. And, there are very good reasons for this:

1) At the centre of the whole food industry is food safety. Food processors are in a better position to control their environment and prevent contamination.

2) The second factor is labour. The people at the store have many responsibilities and peeling carrots or making sandwiches often get missed. Also, training and supervision are much more challenging in the retail environment.

3) The category has taken off and even dedicated, well trained staff often can not keep up at the retail level.

4) Recipes can be more strictly adhered to in a production environment which converts more sales and tighter control of supplies.

At Olaf we have worked very hard to support our customers in fresh prepared food. Our efforts include: developing small portion packaging for produce for the c-store channel; adding better print capabilities to our sandwich wrap business; developing what we believe are the best PETE containers for ease of use and extending shelf life of single sandwiches; and, finally, we have custom designed sandwich bags and boxes that have outstanding consumer appeal and branding.

Our goal has always been to serve select customers extraordinarily. The prepared fresh food industry in Western Canada is exactly the type of segment that fits us well.

Thanks to the support of one of our best customers, we have been added to the list of approved printers for poly bags for Sobeys private label products!

The simple answer is: don’t run out!

Yes, we can help you to save on your packaging expenses by leveraging our domestic and international buying power. We can also help you to manage your cash flows through stocking programs. BUT, it’s immaterial compared to a lost listing. Don’t be fooled by the cheapest price, work with the professionals at Olaf.

In 2011 we saved a national grocery chain over 20% on their millions of bread bags. We also saved a large vegetable packer over 30% by sourcing their clamshells offshore and having their labels applied. Yet, our most satisfied customers are those who increase top line sales through compelling packaging because they have learned that the sweet spot comes when you spend a little more for POP! vs. saving pennies to buy a cheaper commodity.

Why not have coffee with one of our packaging professionals? The worst thing case is you walk away with some great ideas.

No agendas here, we love creating winning packaging!
